Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to $927 million in global ticket sales, making it the second-highest-grossing debut weekend ever for a film. The movie earned $355 million in the U.S. and Canada, with another $572 million from international markets.
Record-breaking numbers
The opening weekend surpassed every other post-pandemic release in North America. Only Avengers: Endgame—which pulled in an inflation-adjusted $1.6 billion globally in 2019—has ever done better. China led the international haul with $121 million in ticket sales.
Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, said the franchise is nearing $10 billion in unadjusted worldwide box office. That total reflects decades of films, not just this latest entry.
Domestic box office receipts remain below pre-pandemic levels. Year-to-date sales are up 10% from last year but still 16% short of 2019 figures.
Why audiences connected
The film follows Peter Parker as he fights crime in a world that no longer remembers he’s Spider-Man. Tom Holland returns for his fourth turn as the character, with Zendaya co-starring as MJ. Critics gave it a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes; audiences scored it 98%.
Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, called it “fundamentally a movie about friendship, about the balm of connection in all our lives.” That theme appears to have struck a chord, particularly with younger viewers.

Greg Durkin, CEO of entertainment research firm Enact Insight, said the story’s focus on loneliness and overcoming personal struggles resonated with Gen Z. “There’s a mental health crisis now with young people—especially acute for young men,” he said. “The pandemic created shock-wave effects we haven’t fully addressed. This movie touches on some really important themes.”
It’s rare for a superhero film to center so explicitly on emotional isolation. Most entries in the genre prioritize spectacle over character depth. That shift might explain why this one stood out in a crowded summer slate.
The bigger picture
The success of Brand New Day helped push the domestic box office to its biggest weekend ever, when combined with another major release, The Odyssey. Dergarabedian noted that many moviegoers saw trailers for Spider-Man while watching The Odyssey, creating a built-in audience.
Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal appear in both films, which may have encouraged crossover viewership. Still, the overall market hasn’t fully recovered. Even with strong openings, the industry is still playing catch-up to pre-2020 levels.
The movie’s performance suggests that audiences aren’t tired of superhero stories—just the same ones. When a franchise takes risks, it can still break records.
